Carotid Artery Disease Treatment Southern Illinois

Understanding Cerebrovascular Disease and Carotid Artery Stenosis

What is Cerebrovascular Disease

Cerebrovascular disease encompasses a range of conditions that affect the blood vessels and blood supply to the brain. One of the most common and serious forms of cerebrovascular disease is carotid artery stenosis, which occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries of the neck (carotids), leading to the narrowing of the artery’s lumen. This condition can result in a reduction of blood flow to the brain, potentially causing a stroke. Up to one-third of strokes are attributed to carotid artery stenosis, making early detection and treatment crucial.

Symptoms
of Cerebrovascular Disease and Carotid Artery Stenosis

Cerebral Vascular Disease often remains asymptomatic until it causes a stroke. However, some people may experience a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, which serves as a warning sign. Symptoms of TIA and stroke can include:

Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arms, or legs, typically on one side of the body.

Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.

Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes.

Dizziness or loss of balance and coordination.

Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

Causes and Risk Factors of Cerebrovascular Disease & Carotid Artery Stenosis

Certain factors increase the risk of developing cerebrovascular disease, including:

Age

Individuals over 60 years old are at a higher risk.

Diabetes

Increases the likelihood of plaque buildup in arteries.

High Cholesterol Levels

Leads to the formation of plaques in arteries.

High Blood Pressure

Puts extra strain on blood vessels.

Smoking

Damages the blood vessels and accelerates the buildup of plaque.

History of Heart Disease

Indicates a predisposition to vascular conditions.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Carotid Artery Disease in Souther Illinois

At the Al-Zoubaidi Vein and Vascular Center in Mount Vernon, we offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment options for patients with carotid artery stenosis in Southern Illinois.

Diagnosis

Ultrasound Testing: A quick and effective way to assess the risk of carotid artery stenosis. This non-invasive test uses sound waves to create images of the carotid arteries and measure the blood flow within them.

Treatment Options

Treatment varies based on the degree of blockage and individual patient needs:

  • Medical Management: Includes controlling blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol levels, along with lifestyle modifications such as quitting smoking.
  • Surgical Intervention: For severe blockages, surgical options include:
    • Carotid Endarterectomy: A procedure to remove plaque from the carotid artery and restore normal blood flow.
    • TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR): A novel procedure with minimal risk of stroke during intervention. TCAR involves reversing the blood flow away from the brain during the procedure to minimize stroke risk.
