Types
of Dialysis Access
Dialysis access is a critical component for patients who require dialysis. The access allows for the efficient removal and return of blood during hemodialysis. There are various types of dialysis access, each tailored to the patient’s specific needs.
Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula
Creation: An AV fistula is surgically created by connecting an artery to a vein, usually in the arm. This procedure causes the vein to grow larger and stronger, making it easier to insert dialysis needles and improving blood flow during dialysis.
Advantages: AV fistulas are preferred due to their durability and lower risk of infection and clotting.
Arteriovenous (AV) Graft
Creation: An AV graft involves connecting an artery to a vein using a synthetic tube. This option is used when a patient’s veins are not suitable for a fistula.
Advantages: AV grafts can be used sooner after placement than fistulas, but they have a higher risk of infection and clotting.
Central Venous Catheter
Use: A central venous catheter is a temporary access option placed in a large vein, typically in the neck or chest. It is used when immediate dialysis is needed, or other access types are not yet available.
Limitations: Central catheters are intended for short-term use due to the higher risk of infection and clotting
